Fitzgerald Biosphere Action Plan 2015

Fitzgerald Biosphere sits on the central south coast of Western Australia, between the southern ocean and the north flowing watersheds of the wheat belt interior. Covering around 1.3 million hectares (Watson and Sanders 1997), it comprises wild natural lands, estuaries, coastlines and seascapes, productive farmlands, with the enterprise and lifestyles of thriving agricultural, coastal and mining communities. It has strong indigenous Noongar and European histories, and includes the small towns of Bremer Bay and Jerramungup in its west, and Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe in its east.

It is a remarkable place, being listed in 1978 by the United Nations Environment, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) Man and Biosphere (MAB) program for it outstanding natural diversity and relatively pristine landscapes (CALM 1991).
